Things dont look good in Libya with Gaddafi’s henchmen patrolling the streets of Tripoli and operating with a shoot to kill policy. There are very limited reliable news reports coming out of Libya in general and Tripoli in particular at the moment, but the common theme is that Gaddaffi is using hired mercenaries to keep a grip on Tripoli by ruthlessly murdering civillians on the streets.

The main thing to emerge is that Gaddafi does not trust the Libyan army to keep him in control while his hired hands from abroad will apparantly do anything if the price is right. The mercenaries are mainly believed to be of african origin though there are credible stories emerging of eastern europeans being involved too.

But surely the game is up for Gaddafi and things have reached a level that can never be recovered from. He has appeared on state TV two or three times now and seemingly is not of sound mind with ramblings about USA, Britain, Osama Bin Laden, Muslim fundamentalists and the BBC all being responsible for the unrest. It surely cant be too long before the mercenaries start to melt away when they feel the game is up. The problem for the Libyan people and those foreigners unlucky enough still to be in Libya is how many of their citizens are killed while Gaddafi makes his final stand to maintain control.

As I write this there is a currently unsubstantiated rumour that Gaddafi has been shot.
